In the first round of the 2013 playoffs the Vancouver Canucks will face the San Jose Sharks, a team that Canucks fans should be familiar with after playing two series against them in the last three years. The Sharks are notorious for under-performing in the playoffs, especially players like Joe Thornton, who is known for slumping during the post season. This makes the Sharks a much better first round matchup for Vancouver than the Blues or Kings would have been.  Vancouver is 0-2-1 against San Jose this season, but they are 2-0 in post season series against them, including a Western Conference final win back in 2011-2012.

It should also be noted that when Vancouver played the Sharks this season they did not have Ryan Kessler and Derek Roy at the time, and the Sharks had still the services of Ryane Clowe. This means the Canucks will have more weapons available on the power play, which was poor for Vancouver through most of the season but came on strong after the Derek Roy acquisition.

Vancouver’s goaltending situation is still unclear, with no word of whether Cory Schneider‘s undisclosed “body” injury will keep him sidelined for Game 1 against the Sharks. If he is unable to go, it will be Roberto Luongo starting in net, and he will have to be sharp because San Jose gets a lot of shots on net and have Brent Burns, a massive 6-foot-5’er from Ajax, Ontario parking himself right in front of the goalie.

What could be an x-factor is the fact the Raffi Torres, the ex-Canuck who caused havoc in he playoffs with his big hits and “pest” style play, is now with the Sharks. Torres is known to go all out and you can be sure he will be gunning for his ex team mates. One big hit could change the whole series and the Sharks are a bigger team than the Canucks overall.
